![]() ![]() Despite her mother and brother's misgivings over the danger becoming Black Panther would put her in, Shuri was well within her right to try and claim the title, and her later exploits prove that she could have defeated S'Yan if she'd been given a fair chance. While Shuri would later be given the opportunity to become the Black Panther after T'Challa was put into a coma by Doctor Doom, her attempt to challenge her uncle shows that she could have assumed the mantle long ago. While most of the audience celebrated when the victorious challenger revealed himself as T'Challa, a despondent Shuri was forced to swallow the bitter fact that she'd been denied the chance to prove herself. ![]() Just then, a masked "stranger" leaped into the arena and challenged S'Yan, eventually defeating him. Undeterred, Shuri managed to slip past them, only to be tackled to the ground just before she could step foot in the ring. When the day of the festival finally arrived, however, Shuri learned that her mother had expressly ordered the guards outside the stadium where the tournament was being held to prevent her from entering. Having made her desire to be Wakanda's first female Black Panther since she was a child, Shuri eagerly signed up for the tournament, despite her mother's attempts to dissuade her. ![]() However, S'Yan was more of a scholar than he was a warrior, and he eventually decided to hold a tournament to find a worthy regent to rule as king and Black Panther until T'Challa came of age. If this occurs, warriors from all walks of Wakandan society are free to challenge the current Black Panther for the throne of Wakanda, even if they aren't from the royal family.įollowing the death of T'Challa and Shuri's father T'Chaka at the hands of Ulysses Klaw, their uncle S'Yan assumed the throne and the mantle of Black Panther. While the right to become the Black Panther is generally reserved for the chosen heir of Wakanda's current ruler, their claim to it can be challenged if the current holder dies, proves themselves unworthy, or wishes to relinquish the title before their chosen heir is old enough to claim it. ![]()
